Massa Gorge – Cross the 124-metre-wide suspension bridge

One-way hike from Belalp to Bettmeralp going down into the impressive Massa Gorge, offering rewarding views of the Aletsch Glacier (UNESCO) and many of the highest peaks of the Alps.

  • Starting point: Belalp Station
  • End point: Bettmeralp
  • Length: 13.2km
  • Duration: 5h
  • Ascending altitude: 858m
  • Descending altitude: 999m

Start the hike at the Belalp mountain station and walk the level path until you reach Belalp Hotel. From there, you can enjoy the first beautiful view into the valley and onto the Aletsch Glacier. Now your descent starts with a steep path, always following the signs to the suspension bridge. On your way down, you will pass green meadows and with some luck you can see marmots. Before you reach the suspension bridge, walk through the forest and cross a rocky section. The suspension bridge crosses the Massa Gorge and is 124m long, 80m high and requires a bit of courage to cross. However, the view into the gorge and the Glacier is absolutely worth it. Now your ascent can start following the sign to Silbersand and then to Moosfluh. Once you reach Moosfluh, enjoy the view of the Mischabel peaks, the Matterhorn, Weisshorn and many more. Walk down into the village of Bettmeralp and take the cable car back into the valley towards Brig.

Hint: Spend a night in Bettmeralp and further explore the Aletsch region with the hike Aletsch Arena (UNESCO) – Touch the greatest Glacier of the Alps.
