Great St.Bernard – Discover your own reflection in a heart-shaped lake

On this round trip you will hike through 2 countries, trek across 4 alpine passes and see at least 6 ice cold mountain lakes.

  • Starting point: Hospice Great St.Bernard
  • End point: Hospice Great St.Bernard
  • Length: 11km
  • Duration: 4h30
  • Ascending altitude: 970m
  • Descending altitude: 970m

Your hike starts at the Col du Grand Saint Bernard behind the Hospice Museum on the small path that goes parallel to the street towards the Italian border. Follow the yellow flashes downwards until you need to pass the road. Continue this way (number 13A) until you cross the same street a second time and reach the mountain hut “Lo Baou”. Behind the house, the path ascends to the Fenêtre de Ferret. You are now back in Switzerland. Take the path down to the three mountain lakes Lacs de Fenêtres, of which one is heart-shaped. Follow the steep path up to Col des Bastillons. Go down to the valley Combe de Drône and start the third climb up to Col des Chevaux. From there on, the path slightly goes back down to the Col du Grand Saint Bernard.

Hint: The historic Hospice on the Great St. Bernard is the home of the famous and adorable St Bernard dogs. During the summer months you will see them up there in their kennels.
