Lötschenpasshütte – Enjoy lunch in no man’s land

Round trip offering a wide variety of highlights like alpine meadows, glaciers, mountain lakes, stony planes – and with a bit of luck – alpine wildlife.

  • Starting point: Lauchernalp (Cable car station)
  • End point: Lauchernalp (Cable car station)
  • Length: 12.2km
  • Duration: 4h45
  • Ascending altitude: 883m
  • Descending altitude: 883m

Take the cablecar at Wiler up to Lauchernalp. Turn left upon exiting the station and head in the direction of Hockenalp. At first, you will walk through a kind of biotope. A small and slightly ascending path brings you to the village Hockenalp. From there, watch out for the yellow signs to Kummenalp. On the way to Kummenalp you have a fantastic view on the Lang glacier at the very end of the Lötschen valley. Once you have reached Kummenalp, the easy part of the roundtrip is over. Start your climb upwards to Lötschenpass and onto the meandering path. Always keep your eyes open, marmots and capricorns are around. When you reach the surreal and stoney plain, the stone piles will guide you the way to the Lötschenpasshütte. Regain your strength with a traditional Swiss meal and a beautiful view of the snow-covered peaks before you head back down to Lauchernalp again. The way back starts behind the Lötschenpasshütte and is well marked with red-white-red signs. Stay on this path until you eventually reach your initial stating point, the mountain station Lauchernalp.

Hint: This one-day round trip can be extented to a two-day roundtrip hike with a overnight stay in the Lötschenpasshütte (reservation needed in advance). The two-day version adds a technically difficult climb to the Hockenhorn in the morning of the second day, before going down to Lauchenalp.
