Barrhorn 3610m – Climb the highest hikeable peak of Switzerland

On this two day round trip in a high alpine environment, you mount one of the highest hiking peaks in Europe with a spectacular view of the Monte Rosa, of the Mischabel mountain ranges as well as of the Weisshorn close by.

  • Starting point: Turtmannhütte
  • End point: Turtmannhütte
  • Length: 9.9km
  • Duration: 5h40
  • Ascending altitude: 1239m
  • Descending altitude: 1239m

For more detailed path descriptions to the Turtmannhütte see our post entitled “Turtmannhütte – Sleep next to Glaciers”. After spending the night at 2519m above sea level at the Turtmannhütte (reservation needed in advance) start your hike early in the morning, taking the trail that starts behind the hut. Soon after, you reach a cliff, which you need to climb up. Installed steel cables will help you to get through this difficult section. From here on, follow the way along the moraine of the Brunegg Glacier and over rocky underground until you reach a crossing. Take the very steep path, which leads you directly to the Barrhorn. Take your time and enjoy the view of the impressive mountain landscape and glaciers. A few hundred meters down from the peak, you will find the path that brings you up to the Inners Barrhorn (3583m). From there, take the path down and finish your round trip back at the Turtmannhütte.
